About Instagram

Instagram, also known as IG, is an American image and video sharing social media website owned by Facebook, Inc. Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It was launched in October 2010 on iOS. A version of Instagram for Android was created and launched in April 2012. Another thing is that the website version of Instagram was launched in November 2012. But, the features in the website version were limited.

A version of Instagram for the Fire OS was published on June 15, 2014. An app for Windows 10 tablets and computers were launched in October 2016. Instagram allows users to upload images and videos and edit them with different filters. These videos can be organized with tags and location information. And, the posts that are published on an Instagram account can be shared publicly or with approved followers. Users can browse other users’ contents through tags, locations etc.

When Instagram was released, they would allow to photos be uploaded at a ratio of 1:1 with the width of 640 pixels so that that would matched the display width of the iPhone. But, this restriction was eased in 2015, with an increase to 1080 pixels. Instagram also added the messaging features. They also added the ability to upload multiple images or videos in a single post, and “Stories”— which was similar to the main competitor of Instagram, Snapchat. Snapchat is a social media that allows users to post photos and videos to a sequential feed. And, each post is visible to others for 24 hours each. After 24 hours, these posts are removed. As one of the studies in January 2019, it is said that the Stories feature of Instagram is used by 500 million users’ every day.

As of May 2020, the most followed person in Instagram is Cristiano Ronaldo with a huge 217 million followers. The most followed woman is singer Ariana Grande with over 184 million followers. As of January 2019, the most liked photo in Instagram is the picture of an egg. This record is hold from an account @world_record_egg. This account was created for the sole purpose of beating the previous world record for the most liked picture of an egg. The previous record was held by Kylie Jenner and the most liked photo had 18 million likes. But, the current most liked picture has 54 million likes. Instagram became the most downloaded mobile app in 2010.

History

Instagram firstly started to develop as Burbn. It was a mobile check-in app created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. But, after it was developed, Krieger and Systrom realized that it was getting too similar to Foursquare. That’s why; they again refocused on creating a photo sharing website. This feature became popular among all of the Burbn users. After that, it was renamed to Instagram.

Beginning of Instagram and all of the Major Funding

On March 5, 2010, Kevin finished a seed funding round with Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz while he was working on Burbn. In October of 2010, Josh Riedel joined the company as a Community Manager. In November, Shayne Sweeney joined the company as an engineer. And, in August 2011, Jessica Zollman joined as a Community Evangelist.

The first Instagram photo was of a dog posted by Kevin Systrom. But, some people say that the photo was of South Beach Harbor at Pier 30. This photo was posted by Mike Krieger. The photo of the dog is said to be the first photo because of the earlier letter of the alphabet in its URL.

Acquisition by Facebook

April 3, 2012. Instagram released a new update on the android version. After that, this app was downloaded more than a million times in less than one day. After that time, the android app got two significant updates. The first one was in March 2014. In this update, the app size got half the size that it was before. And, the performance was improved a lot in this update.

The other one was in April 2017. In this update, an offline mode was added to Instagram. This allowed users to interact and view different images and contents without an internet connection. At that time, almost 80% of the 600 million users of Instagram were outside of the US. In the same announcement, they also announced that they were “exploring the iOS version”.

On April 9, 2012, Facebook, Inc bought Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stock. They planned to keep the company independently managed. This deal was approved on August 14, 2012 by Britain’s Office for Fair Trading. On August 22, 2012, the Federal Trade Commission of the US closed its investigation so that the deal could proceed. After all this, the deal of Facebook and Instagram was closed officially with a purchase of $300 million in cash and 23 million shares of stock.

According to CNN, This deal was closed just before Facebook scheduled initial public offering. And, this deal was compared to the $35 million deal when Yahoo! paid for Flickr in 2005. This deal gave Systrom a net worth of $400 million, according to Wired.

The Redesign and Windows app

In June of 2015, the desktop interface got redesigned and it became more flat and minimalistic. And, before Facebook bought Instagram, the desktop interface showed five images. But, afterwards, it was changed to three images to match the mobile interface.

On May 11, 2016, Instagram updated its design and added a black and white interface in the Instagram app. They also updated the icon to be more abstract, colorful and modern. The rumor that Instagram will be getting a redesign started to spread in April after The verge received a screenshot from a tipster. But, an Instagram spokesperson ruined this rumor by telling the publication that it was just a concept.

On December of 2006, Instagram had an update of comment liking. That means, other users can like one users comments. But, the commenter would not get a notification of someone liking his/her comment. Another update was that the poster could disable comment on his/her posts too.

In April of 2006, after long time of requests from the public and Microsoft, Instagram finally released an app for windows 10 mobile app. But, Instagram previously released a beta version of the app for windows mobile 8 in 2013. The newly released Instagram app supported video creating, editing, posting and watching live streams. It also supported album posts and direct messages.

The same way, an app for windows 10 tablets and desktop was released in October 2016. In May, Instagram allowed the mobile users to upload photos directly from the Instagram website. The lightweight version of the explore tab for mobile website was also added in the update.

IGTV and Other Things

On June 20, 2018, IGTV was launched as a single application.

During Facebook F8, it was announced that the public display of like counts would be removed. Only the user that posted the content could see the amount of likes. And, they said that it would start from Canada and spread to the rest of the world. Adam Mosseri who was the head of Instagram at that time said that the main reason for this update was so that the users could “worry a little bit less about how many likes they’re getting on Instagram and spend a bit more time connecting with the people that they care about.”
